Stargazers have a new way to view the world from space thanks to the efforts of four tech companies and the crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) project provides a dramatic look at our planet from the astronomical perspective of the orbiting ISS. Four HD cameras from Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony and Hitachi were installed on the exterior of the ISS to deliver a variety of angles on Earth and to provide stunning visual images of the planet’s weather, ice caps, oceans and landmasses. The views made possible by the HDEV experiment will provide valuable data for researchers while thrilling amateur astronomers around the globe.
